Camping has been around since the beginning of time. The Indians as well as the cowboys camped out under the stars night after night. It was a way of life for them, and they accepted it as such.
Today, camping is a form of recreation for many people year around. Many people prefer the modern conveniences that an RV has to offer. Others, though, prefer roughing it by using a tent along with some other basic supplies. If you have never been camping, you may want to plan to try it for a short time, such as a weekend getaway. Check the weather forcast and choose a weekend that is going to be relatively warm and pleasant. The only means of heat you will have out in the wilderness will be your own body heat, blankets, sleeping bag, and a campfire.
Besides a tent, blankets, sleeping bag, and pillow, you will also need to assemble together a skillet, cooking pan, matches kept in an airtight plastic bag, a food and clean water supply, bug repellent, a change of clothing, a lantern or flashlights with extra batteries, and laundry bags for dirty clothes. Extra laundry bags will also serve well as a means in which to hang your food supply up in a tree away from scavenging animals.
Don't forget to pack also your toothbrush, toothpaste, a first aid kit, and other personal supplies that you and your family will need while you are camping. Keep in mind that you will need to take any medical prescriptions that you or your family might need while you are away from home. Keep in mind also, that you will need to leave electric toothbrushes, blankets, and other types of luxuries at home if you really want to rough it out in the woods. You might also pack a deck of playing cards or some other simple activities to keep you and your family occupied.
Wood for the campsite can be found in the wooded area at the campsite, so that is one item you need not take with you.
Campsites can be rented at private campgrounds or at public sites such as state-run or government-run parks. Find a site and rent your space and prepare for your adventure. Some sites have running water as well as electrical outlets that can be plugged into. THese are especially useful if you intend to take an RV which needs water and electric.
Once you arrive at your campsite, you will need to set up your campsite. Your tent needs to be put up and the campfire needs to be prepared first. After the tent is up, prepare your bedding for the night. Then, your things will need to be organized and put away. Don't forget to either hang your food supply in a high tree branch, or keep it in your vehicle. There are several species of hungry animals running around the woods who would enjoy to eat your food! Another task is for someone to scrounge around for plenty of firewood. You will need many larger pieces as well as smaller kindling.
You and your family are then basically ready for a weekend of camping fun and adventures!
